Serious Play

Two new exhibitions by contemporary Czech female artists will open on Thursday, May 31, at the Václav Chad Gallery at the castle in Zlín. One of them is an exhibition of objects by glass artist Michaela Spružinová entitled Serious Play. It is divided into three parts – the entrance section could be described using the Czech expression "Holka krev a mlíko" (a girl full of life), followed by the "Exotic Pavilion" section and finally the artist's "Picture Gallery."

The artist uses the demanding technique of drawn glass threads, from which she forms various fragile structures resembling a fine net or fabric. She leaves the resulting relief to rest in a glass furnace, creating a hanging picture. In the case of spatial objects, she places thin glass rods next to each other. She primarily works with recycled material – waste glass from glassworks, as it is, including its flaws and defects, which she transforms into her characteristic works.

When designing the exhibition, the artist also created completely new works, focusing on the gallery space itself and creating a site-specific installation. Each completely unique work has a hidden story. A story that is woven into a delicate glass network and gradually reveals itself upon closer inspection.
